S30 Motor Being Phased Out? Here’s Your Brook Crompton WE3 Replacement Guide

Struggling to source a replacement S30 motor? You’re not alone.

Brook Crompton is phasing out the S30 range. Stock levels are dropping every year. And in a lot of cases, a straight S30-for-S30 swap just isn’t possible anymore.

The good news: there’s a direct replacement. The Brook Crompton WE3 range is built for exactly this situation. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Tell If You Have an S30 or an S10

Not sure which motor you’re actually running? Check the frame code and the product number on the nameplate.

S30 motors are marked with a frame code starting JP, for example JP-DA112MA. The product number on the nameplate carries a J, for example 112J269203.

S10 motors came before the S30 and use a frame code starting with P, for example P-DA112MA. The nameplate product number carries a P, for example 112P269217.

Both ranges come with thermistors fitted as standard, some with heaters, and both are available in aluminium or cast iron construction.

Why Are the S30 and S10 Being Phased Out?

Simple answer: they’re old ranges, and Brook Crompton is moving production towards the newer WE range.

This means available stock is shrinking each month. In some cases, we can still source an exact S30 replacement, but that’s becoming the exception rather than the rule. Realistically, most replacements now go out as a WE3.

The same applies to the S10. It’s been superseded for a while, and it’s now following the S30 out the door.

Meet the Replacement: the Brook Crompton WE3

The WE3 range is based on the Brook Crompton W series platform. It’s a more modern, better supported motor, and it comes in at a lower price point than the S30.

Crucially, it doesn’t lose the feature that matters most on a like-for-like swap: thermistors are fitted as standard on the WE3, just as they were on your S30.

WE3 or WE4? Getting the Efficiency Rating Right

The WE3 is an IE3 efficiency motor. Its sister range, the WE4, is the IE4 variant.

Some S30 motors were available as IE4, but only across a limited set of frame sizes. The WE4 range covers more frame sizes at IE4 and is more readily stocked, so if your application needs IE4 efficiency, the WE4 is worth checking as a like-for-like option.

Will It Actually Fit? Checking Dimensions Before You Order

Most WE3 replacements match up closely with the S30 or S10 they’re replacing. But “closely” isn’t the same as “identical”, and it’s worth checking before you commit.

In some cases, the WE3 is slightly longer overall. As an example, a 4kW 4-pole S30 is roughly 390mm overall length, while the equivalent WE3 comes in around 417mm. Treat these figures as a general guide rather than a guarantee. Every frame size and power rating is different.

To avoid any surprises on site, we’ll send over the outline drawing and full datasheet for your specific replacement before it goes out, so you can check it against your existing installation.

Spares: The Reason to Move

A crucial part.

As S30 and S10 stock dwindles, spare parts for those ranges are getting harder to find and may stop being produced altogether. We only hold limited stock of S30 and S10 spares ourselves.

The WE3, on the other hand, is fully supported. We hold spares and replacement parts across the range, including flanges, endshields, and terminal box components. If something needs replacing down the line, you’re not left waiting on a part that no longer exists.

So, it’s not just about today’s replacement. It’s about not getting caught out in five years’ time when the S30 spare you need simply isn’t there.

BAWCo (Approved Motor Centre) and Brook Crompton hold a large amount of stock, so most replacements can be same-day or next-day. For standard mods, we can also carry these out in-house, such as a mounting change or adding heaters. For anything more complex, such as frame size variations, we can source directly from the factory.

The photo matters as much as the nameplate. Some motors are B3 foot-mounted but have been modified to B5 further down the line, and the nameplate was never updated to reflect it. A photo helps us catch that and confirm the mounting and the space around the motor.

It depends on your situation. If it’s a critical motor, it’s worth having a spare ready. If you can live with a day or two of downtime, you can wait until it fails. But if it’s a special or custom motor, it’s best to plan ahead. Planned downtime, or no downtime at all, always beats unplanned downtime.
