Gearbox Repair

  1. Drain oil and dismantle gearbox
  2. Inspect bearing and seal surfaces for wear or damage
  3. Remove the affected bearing/ sealswhich are to be replaced after the shaft or housing work
  4. All bearings to be replaced if bearing surfaces are worn
  5. Carry out the required engineering work to bring the bearing or seal surface back within tolerance
  6. Fit the new bearings
  7. Clean and reassemble gearbox with new oil seals
  8. Check the backlash between gears

Possible Problems

  • Knocking sound originating from the hollow bore
  • Metal dust from wear

Gearbox Repair

  1. Drain oil and dismantle gearbox
  2. Inspect the gears for wear or damage
  3. Remove and replace the affected bearings
  4. Carry out engineering work to restore the hollow bore to tolerance, or replace it depending on repair status and availability
  5. Clean and reassemble gearbox with new oil seals
  6. Check the backlash between gears

Example Procedure

  1. Drain oil and dismantle gearbox
  2. Inspect gears for wear or damage
  3. Remove and replace affected bearings after shaft work
  4. Replace the worn or damaged gears, depending on availability
  5. Clean and reassemble gearbox with new oil seals
  6. Check the backlash between gears

Custom Built Workshop

SMILAW Works is our custom-built workshop in West Yorkshire, designed for a wide range of repairs. Indoor cranes handle the heavy lifting, and we’re within a mile of the M606 and M62 for easy access.

If an industrial gearbox repair isn’t the most economical option, we can quote you for a new gearbox. That way you can compare costs and choose.

Servicing to Suit Your Duty

A gearbox working at full capacity needs servicing more often than one working at half. We recommend intervals based on your application and operating capacity.
