AC Motor: Rewind

Possible Problems

  • Over current failures
  • Excessive heat
  • Unable to perform at full capacity
  • The rotor doesn’t spin when powered up
  • Unbalanced resistances or open circuit
  • Windings low to earth

BAWCo Example Repair Procedure

Electric Motor Rewind (Single and 3-Phase)
  1. Detail and strip the windings
  2. Remove old insulation and clean the core pack
  3. Insulate slots with required heat specification (Class F and H)
  4. Wind, connect, and test
  5. Impregnate with varnish, and oven-stove
  6. Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run

AC Motor: Bearing Housing and Surface Repairs

Possible Problems

  • Excessive noise
  • Excessive vibration
  • Excessive heat on the endshield or shafts
  • Rotor mechanically locked up
  • Application wear or damage due to misalignment

  1. Strip the motor down
  2. Remove the old bearings
  3. Measure the shaft and housings for wear – perform engineering work on worn surfaces to bring them back within tolerance
  4. Fit new bearings
  5. Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run

AC Motor: Re-lead Windings

Possible Problems

  • Visual inconstancies
    • Signs of melting insulation on the leads
    • Cracking or discolouration of the leads
    • Blown lead
  • Unbalanced resistances or open circuit

  1. Dismantle the motor
  2. Cut the leads back to the connections
  3. Test windings in case further action is needed
  4. Connect new leads and terminate
  5. Varnish and oven-stove windings
  6. Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run

AC Motor: Worn or Bent Drive Shaft

Possible Problems

  4. Fit new bearings
