Gearbox: Oil Seal and Worn Bearing Surface Repair

Possible Problems

  • Oil leaking from the shaft
  • Excessive noise and vibration

BAWCo Example Repair Procedure

  1. Drain oil and dismantle gearbox
  2. Inspect bearing and seal surfaces for wear or damage
  3. Remove the affected bearing/ sealswhich are to be replaced after the shaft or housing work
  4. All bearings to be replaced if bearing surfaces are worn
  5. Carry out the required engineering work to bring the bearing or seal surface back within tolerance
  6. Fit the new bearings
  7. Clean and reassemble gearbox with new oil seals
  8. Check backlash between gears in adequate

Gearbox: Worn Input and Output Shaft Repair

Possible Problems

  • Excessive noise and vibration
  • Knocking sound originating from the hollow bore
  • Metal dust from wear

  1. Drain oil and dismantle gearbox
  2. Inspect the gears for wear or damage
  3. Remove and replace the affected bearings
  4. Carry out engineering work to restore the hollow bore to tolerance, or replace it depending on repair status and availability
  5. Clean and reassemble gearbox with new oil seals
  6. Check backlash between gears in adequate
