DC Motor Repairs
Over 100 Years of Experience in DC Motor Repairs
Below is a range of common faults and our detailed repair procedures for each
Common Fault and Fix
DC Motor: Stator Rewind
Possible Problems
- Overspinning
- Overcurrent
- Underperforming
- Increased heat
BAWCo Example Repair Procedure
- Detail and strip the windings
- Remove old insulation and clean the core pack
- Insulate slots with the required heat class (Class F or Class H)
- Wind, connect, and test
- Impregnate with varnish, and oven-stove
- Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run
Each motor is assessed individually, tailoring a repair plan with a full work scope that is specific to each motor. The procedure above is just an example of our typical process.

Common Fault and Fix
DC Motor: Armature Rewind
Possible Problems
- Overcurrent
- Underperforming
- Cogging
- Sparking
- Blown
BAWCo Example Repair Procedure
- Detail and strip the windings
- Test the commutator
- Remove old insulation and clean the core pack
- Insulate slots with the required heat class (Class F or Class H)
- Wind and connect wires to the commutator and solder
- Test, impregnate with varnish, and oven-stove
- Skim and undercut the commutator
- Balance the armature to required ISO G Grades
- Perform insulation and voltage drop tests on the armature
- Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run
Each motor is assessed individually, tailoring a repair plan with a full work scope that is specific to each motor. The procedure above is just an example of our typical process.

Common Fault and Fix
DC Motor: Bearing Housing and Surface Repair
Possible Problems
- Excessive noise
- Excessive heat on the endshield or shafts
- Rotor mechanically locked up
- Application wear or damage due to misalignment
BAWCo Example Repair Procedure
- Strip the motor down
- Remove the old bearings
- Measure the shaft and housings for wear – perform engineering work on worn surfaces to bring them back within tolerance
- Fit new bearings
- Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run
Every motor is assessed individually, tailoring a repair plan with a full work scope that is specific to each motor. The procedure above is just an example of our typical process.

Common Fault and Fix
DC Motor: Re-lead Windings
Possible Problems
- Visual inconstancies
- Signs of melting insulation on the leads
- Cracking or discolouration of the leads
- Blown lead
- Unbalanced resistances or open circuit
BAWCo Example Repair Procedure
- Dismantle the motor
- Cut the leads back to the connections
- Test windings in case further action is needed
- Connect new leads and terminate
- Varnish and oven-stove windings
- Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run
Each motor is assessed individually, tailoring a repair plan with a full work scope that is specific to each motor. The procedure above is just an example of our typical process.

Common Fault and Fix
DC Motor: Worn or Bent Drive Shaft
Possible Problems
- Visual inspection
- Measures below tolerance
BAWCo Diagnostic
- Clock the shaft for trueness
- Measure to check the exact size
BAWCo Example Repair Procedure
- Dismantle the motor
- Remove bearings
- Perform engineering work to build the shaft back up and machine it concentric
- Fit new bearings
- Assemble the motor, perform final tests, and run
Each motor is assessed individually, tailoring a repair plan with a full work scope that is specific to each motor. The procedure above is just an example of our typical process.
